- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related field (required). Master’s degree is a plus. 4-6+ years of professional experience in system verification, quality assurance, or hardware/software testing (preferably with audio, consumer electronics, or embedded systems). Experience in the audio technology domain or with microphone/recording products is highly desirable.
- Technical Skills & Domain Expertise:
- Desktop Application Testing (Windows & macOS): Proven experience testing PC and Mac applications that interact with hardware devices. Comfortable with installation processes, device driver handling, software update flows, OS-specific permissions, and verifying app-based control/configuration of connected audio devices. Able to assess performance, stability, and reliability of desktop apps in various system conditions (fresh install vs. upgrade, low system resources, etc.).
- Mobile Application Testing (iOS & Android): Hands-on experience testing mobile apps involving hardware connectivity (USB On-The-Go or Bluetooth). Familiar with addressing OS fragmentation (various iOS/Android versions/devices), managing app permissions (microphone, Bluetooth, etc.), and verifying robust behavior under background/foreground transitions, network changes, and app updates. Ensures latency and UX remain optimal on mobile platforms when controlling or recording from the microphone.
- USB Connectivity & Technologies: Strong knowledge of USB 2.0/3.x standards and experience testing USB audio devices. Able to verify USB-A and USB-C connections including device enumeration on different operating systems, driver interactions, power negotiation and charging behavior, adherence to USB Audio Class specifications, and performance characteristics (throughput, latency, jitter). Skilled in testing edge cases like hot-plug/unplug, system suspend/resume, error recovery, and firmware updates over USB, ensuring reliable operation across various hosts and hubs.
- Bluetooth & BLE Wireless: Solid experience testing Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy features in consumer or audio products. Proficient in verifying wireless audio pairing/bonding processes, audio streaming quality and latency, range tests, reconnection robustness, and coexistence with other wireless signals. Understands BLE profiles and low-power behavior. Bonus: Familiarity with general RF/wireless audio systems (e.g., Wi-Fi, proprietary RF).
- Audio Acoustics (Microphone Performance): Strong understanding of microphone acoustics and key audio performance concepts. Able to plan and execute tests measuring frequency response, polar patterns, sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), dynamic range, self-noise, maximum SPL handling, and distortion (THD). Experience with acoustic measurement tools (e.g., audio analyzers, calibrated sound sources) and methodologies to ensure the microphone’s acoustic performance aligns with design specifications and customer expectations.
- Microphone DSP & Audio Processing: Strong understanding of DSP algorithms commonly used in microphones (e.g., preamps/gain staging, equalization, compression, limiting, gating, noise reduction, AEC). Experience defining test strategies for verifying DSP features across various settings – confirming that DSP adjustments (like tone presets, filters, or voice presets) behave correctly and do not introduce audio artifacts. Able to test both the functional behavior and the acoustic impact of DSP features to ensure they add value without compromising audio quality.
- Objective & Subjective Audio Quality Testing: Proven ability to assess audio quality through both objective measurements and subjective listening. Skilled in using audio measurement equipment and software to capture quantitative metrics (frequency response curves, THD+N, latency, etc.), and correlating these with listening evaluations (critical listening sessions, user experience trials) to verify that the product’s sound quality meets the demands of discerning creators and end-users.
- System-Level Testing Practices: Comprehensive knowledge of system testing methodologies, including functional testing, regression testing, exploratory testing, performance & stress testing, reliability and long-duration (“soak”) testing, and corner-case analysis. Ability to design and execute test scenarios that simulate real-world usage over extended periods, ensuring the product performs consistently under varied conditions and over time.
- Tools & Documentation: Proficiency with defect tracking and test management tools (e.g., Jira or similar) to log bugs, track test progress, and report quality metrics. Strong documentation skills to create clear test plans, test cases, and detailed defect reports with steps to reproduce, logs, and impact analysis. Basic familiarity with test automation or scripting and use of lab instruments (audio analyzers, USB protocol analyzers, Bluetooth sniffers, etc.) for troubleshooting is a plus.
- Personal Attributes (Soft Skills):
- Customer Advocacy & Ownership: Unwavering commitment to the customer’s perspective. The ideal candidate takes quality personally – consistently putting the end-user experience first and taking ownership of product outcomes. Has the backbone to stand firm on quality issues that matter to customers, confidently explaining why identified defects must be addressed to deliver a flawless product.
- Passion for Finding Defects: Naturally curious and tenacious about breaking products in creative ways to expose potential issues. Exhibits a relentless drive to find bugs (both obvious and subtle) and enjoys the challenge of uncovering problems that others might overlook, in service of making the product as robust as possible.
- High Accountability: Owns the product’s quality – meaning if a customer finds a problem, this individual treats it as a personal miss. Strives to make such escapes exceedingly rare by thorough testing. Demonstrates a learning mindset, using any escaped issues as lessons to continually improve test coverage and processes.
- Exceptional Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication Able to articulate complex defects and their impact clearly and persuasively to diverse stakeholders (developers, product managers, support teams). Crafts concise, data-driven bug reports and effectively communicates status and risk, ensuring everyone understands the severity and customer implications of issues.
- Collaboration & Influence: Strong aptitude for building positive relationships across teams. Works closely with Product Management, Development, DSP/Audio teams, and Customer Support to align on quality goals, test coverage, and issue resolutions. Uses influence, transparency, and teamwork to drive a quality-focused culture and ensure smooth, efficient product delivery.
